Parenting is hard and often can test the most patient of us. None of us are perfect and we all make mistakes. However, research indicates that It's important to ensure our parenting style is supporting healthy growth and development in our children; because the way we interact with our child and how we discipline them will influence them for the rest of their life. School holidays can be a difficult time for parents, especially working parents. Balancing work with childcare is hard and often expensive. Even if you are home, keeping children entertained can be tough, especially if the weather is bad and going out is more of a challenge. But get it right and the holidays can be a lovely time for everyone, including you. Here are some tips for surviving, and even enjoying Happy Fathers day to my hubby and all Dad's out there. Let yourself sit quietly in a place of beauty. Walk slowly, drawing in the present moment through your gaze. Taste something...as a momentary gift to yourself. Be the friend you need in this moment. That will also make it easier for others to give to you. Reach out. Ask another being, "What would help?" Listen to music; let it enter the cells of your being and your soul. Over a cuppa last weekend a colleague and myself discussed the growing trend of losing our boys and men to suicide and displacement, we both agreed we are going to collaborate, although neither of us know what or how at this stage. Watch this space. In 2007 I wrote a mini thesis on “the narrative that men provide for their violence’. I clearly remember sitting with my professor stunned at ONE of the unexpected discovery that came through that small study, ever since I have been vigilant. Last week, I did a Menopause Management Intensive webinar by Dr Tamara Dickson MD, who among other things teaches at Bastyr University USA. She presented the latest research providing insight into the causes of some of the symptoms and the treatment plans for the management of Menopause. Loved it, so I thought I would share some information ...... Perimenopause is the two to eight years preceding menopause and one year following final menses. NEXT week, 20 to 26 May, is Natural Medicine Week, and the Central Highland Complementary Medicine Network is hosting a collaborative community event to celebrate. Between 9am and 12pm on Monday, 20 May, qualified registered naturopaths, nutritionists, mental health practitioners and an exercise physiologist will be at the Ballarat Business Centre. Amongst other therapists, they’ll be available to meet locals in a safe and open environment, answering questions, concerns and scepticism about natural medicine over a cuppa. Special guests include Journalist and Naturopath, Julie O’Connell Seamer and General Practitioner, Dr Rod Hanton. Organiser and Naturopath, Jacqui Fernandez has a background in Health Science. She said collaboration between bio-medical and natural medicine practitioners is important to deliver the best healthcare model. “It’s not us versus them, it’s what we can do together,” she said. “I think a lot of people think we’re still hippies in orange robes and bare feet chanting. We’ve moved far from that. “We take traditional philosophies and principles of treating the whole person, identifying the cause and use traditional knowledge along with more evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes. Health is a way of living, and that’s what we want to showcase.” Mrs Fernandez believes the government should regulate and register Naturopaths for public safety and best practice. The event is also an opportunity to discuss this issue. The event is near-on sold out and a gold coin donation will be requested upon arrival, with all proceeds going to Creswick-based palliative care charity, Shannon’s Bridge. The Federal government was recently under fire for cutting private health insurance rebates to natural therapies. Following public protest, Health Minister, Greg Hunt has said the changes will be reviewed. Attended the international Conference and am so proud to be an Australian practitioner, the professionalism of the industry is up there with the rest of the world. They had a whole corridor of research papers and during the break, people just stood around and soaked up the information. I was there at every break. Loved it.
Presentations was from our roots before Christ to current climate and our challenges. They had the latest in Medicinal cannabis and the research is incredible that is being conducted here in Australia. The speakers were so knowledgeable, down to earth and passionate about their work, which was inspirational. Only at a Naturopathic conference would they have a full urn of Lemon & Ginger tea lol. Research indicates that most naturopaths, do what they do, is because they, love what they do. I thought I was the only one who loved my work LOL. Needed to post this about kids, a powerful speech given by one of the speakers about parenting and of course each time she looked up I thought she was talking to me directly. I love Kahil Gibran, I remember reading his first poem and was hooked.
Like most of us, I often not only question my own parenting but also the professional advice I give. This poem speaks to my heart and resonates with my ethos of raising children. Children truly are the most precious gifts given to us. Love em up! In my professional opinion Essential oils should Not be ingested, there are numerous articles about this and I cannot reiterate this in stronger terms. This is due to the concentrated potency of these oils and harm they can do long term. In this article the author gives tips of adding sources of these oils such as a fresh orange/lemon/mint/ lavender/ to a jug of water.
