Menopause Symptoms: What’s Driving Them and What to Do

19/4/2026

Menopause is not a breakdown — it’s a biological transition with whole-body impact.
Oestrogen, progesterone and metabolic shifts influence the brain, gut, sleep, mood and weight regulation. What can feel random — hot flushes, anxiety, poor sleep, brain fog, vaginal dryness, change in libido and weight changes — is often a coordinated response to these changes.
Menopause symptoms are not just about hormones in isolation. The nervous system, gut health, metabolism, sleep and stress response all interact, shaping how you feel day to day.
If your menopause symptoms aren’t improving, the underlying drivers may not have been fully assessed. A more integrated, individualised approach can help clarify what is contributing to symptoms and support both short-term relief and long-term health and wellbeing.

Podcast: Reflections on 20+ Years in Integrative Healthcare

In this episode of the Australian Traditional Medicine Society (ATMS) 'Let’s Talk Natural Medicine – Legends Series' podcast, Jacqui shares honest reflections from over 20 years of practice. She discusses lessons on purpose, patient care, consistency, herbal medicine, and growth in integrative, patient-centred healthcare. The conversation was relaxed and candid, complete with laughter, real insights, and a few early blunders.
  • Purpose: When life purpose taps you on the shoulder, the bigger risk is often not taking it
  • Success: There are no shortcuts — only hard work, continual learning and passion
  • Clarity: Health begins when we turn down the noise and focus on what truly supports us
  • Consistency: Long-term outcomes come from recognising patterns and staying the course
  • Patient care: True healing is built on trust, empathy and collaboration
  • Perspective: Growth comes from the lessons, experiences and people in your corner
  • Herbal medicine: One of the greatest privileges in practice is creating personalised herbal blends

Celebrate Food

7/3/2026

Celebrating Food: Nourishment Beyond Nutrition

Food is more than fuel — it is connection, culture and nourishment for both body and mind. Taking time to appreciate food, its preparation and the experience of eating supports digestion, enhances satisfaction and encourages a more balanced relationship with what we eat. Slowing down and becoming present with food can improve awareness of hunger and fullness cues, support gut health and contribute to overall wellbeing.

Over the weekend, I collected a couple of baskets of nectarines from our kitchen garden tree, which I shared with our local Food Is Free in Ballarat — a simple reminder of how closely food connects us to the rhythms of the seasons.
As a Ballarat naturopath focusing on nutrition, I often encourage people to see food not only as something we eat, but as something we learn from and celebrate. The slides highlight a few simple ideas that can help build a healthier relationship with food:

Why Slowing Down With Food Matters

• Food literacy — understanding food and how it supports health
• Whole foods — choosing natural, unrefined ingredients
• Balancing the five tastes — sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent
• Food diversity — eating a wide range of nutrient-dense foods
• Mindful eating — noticing flavours, textures and aromas
• Seasonal cooking — using fresh produce in different ways

A few simple ideas can change the way we think about food.

Power in the Telling. The Risk and Benefits of Keeping Secrets.

28/2/2026

Some secrets don’t just stay hidden — they box us in.

Secrets hold tremendous power. Sometimes they protect us, sometimes they protect others — but the weight of what remains unspoken can quietly affect our emotional and physical wellbeing. As a psychotherapist in Ballarat, I often see how the things we carry privately can influence stress, relationships and how the body feels.

The slides explore a few ideas about secrecy, safety and healing:
• Why we keep secrets — avoiding shame or conflict
• The cost of secrecy — anxiety, isolation and emotional exhaustion
• The body remembers — tension, fatigue or gut discomfort
• When privacy is healthy — boundaries are not secrets
• The risk of telling — fear of rejection or vulnerability
• Safe disclosure — sharing can reduce shame and restore personal power

Sometimes healing begins when what has been carried in silence is spoken.

Osteoporosis

22/2/2026

Osteoporosis is often called the “silent” bone condition — many people don’t realise their bones are weakening until a fracture occurs.

Osteoporosis is often called a silent condition, developing over time without obvious symptoms. Factors such as gut health, nutrient absorption and lifestyle play a critical role in maintaining bone strength and reducing fracture risk.

Osteoporosis and bone health are influenced by:
  • Reduced bone density over time, often without symptoms
  • Gastrointestinal conditions that impair nutrient absorption
  • Long-term impact of coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel conditions
  • Poor digestion affects calcium, magnesium and vitamin D uptake
  • Lifestyle factors such as smoking, poor diet and low physical activity
  • The misconception that calcium alone is sufficient for bone health
  • The essential role of movement and weight-bearing exercise
  • Nutritional factors, including minerals, protein and overall diet quality
  • Early testing and screening to detect bone loss
  • Preventative strategies to maintain long-term musculoskeletal health
Osteoporosis prevention requires a comprehensive approach that includes gut health, nutrient absorption, movement and lifestyle support. With early awareness and targeted strategies, it is possible to protect bone density and support long-term strength and resilience.

Kintsugi the art of healing

15/2/2026

Kintsugi: A Gentle Approach to Healing Through Self-Acceptance and Integration

The Japanese art of Kintsugi reflects a powerful truth about healing—our struggles are not flaws to conceal, but experiences that shape who we become. Rather than hiding what has been broken, Kintsugi teaches us to honour it, restore it, and see beauty within it. Healing comes through acceptance and integration, not perfection
  • Emotional pain can become a source of resilience and insight
  • Masking our authentic selves can create internal strain
  • Growth begins when we acknowledge what we have lived through
  • Self-compassion allows healing to unfold naturally
  • Our past experiences can become part of our strength
  • Integration of the past supports emotional balance and well-being
  • Acceptance fosters empowerment and inner stability
  • Healing is a process, not a destination
  • Imperfection is not weakness—it is part of being human
Nothing about you is broken — the cracks simply show where the gold belongs.

Blood sugar instability

7/2/2026

Blood Sugar Instability: Why Energy, Mood & Cravings Fluctuate

Blood sugar instability isn’t about willpower or strict food rules. It reflects how the body responds to what, when, and how we eat—alongside stress, sleep, and overall health. These responses influence insulin and other hormones, shaping energy, mood, and mental clarity.
  • Blood sugar spikes and crashes can trigger fatigue, irritability, and cravings
  • Repeated spikes may activate stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline
  • Symptoms can include anxiety, brain fog, shakiness, and energy dips
  • Irregular meals, refined carbohydrates, caffeine, and chronic stress worsen instability
  • Blood sugar issues may occur even when routine tests appear normal
  • Protein, fibre, and healthy fats help stabilise glucose levels
  • Regular meals support consistent energy and metabolic balance
  • Sleep, stress regulation, and gentle movement improve glucose control
  • Personalised herbal and nutritional support may assist when indicated
  • Stable blood sugar supports long-term metabolic and nervous system health
Supporting stable blood sugar is fundamental to energy, mood, and metabolic health. With a personalised and consistent approach, it is possible to reduce fluctuations and restore balance over time.

PALPITATIONS

24/1/2026

Heart Palpitations: Understanding Causes, Triggers & When to Seek Care

Heart palpitations are the sensation of becoming aware of your heartbeat—often felt as racing, fluttering, pounding, or skipped beats. While many palpitations are harmless, persistent or unusual symptoms should always be assessed. Understanding the underlying triggers can help guide both medical care and supportive lifestyle strategies.
  • Palpitations are the sensation of noticing your heartbeat
  • They may feel like racing, fluttering, pounding, or skipped beats
  • Changes in heart rhythm or nervous system activity can trigger them
  • Stress and anxiety can increase awareness of heart activity
  • Hormones, blood sugar fluctuations, and electrolyte imbalances may contribute
  • Caffeine, dehydration, illness, and some medications can trigger symptoms
  • Most palpitations are benign, but ongoing or severe symptoms require medical assessment
  • Lifestyle, diet, and stress patterns often influence frequency and intensity
  • Supporting overall health can help reduce triggers alongside medical care
Heart palpitations often reflect the interaction between the heart, nervous system, hormones, and metabolism. A balanced approach—combining medical assessment with naturopathic interventions —can help manage symptoms safely and effectively.

Living Simply, Loving Fully

1/12/2025

Living Simply, Loving Fully: Creating a Life of Clarity, Balance & Intention

A life that feels aligned is rarely built through big, dramatic change. More often, it emerges through small, intentional choices—guided by clarity, values, and a willingness to slow down and reconnect with what truly matters.
  • Simplicity creates space to focus on what truly matters
  • Clarity grows when actions align with values and priorities
  • Stillness allows the mind to settle and perspective to return
  • Intentional living supports balance, energy and wellbeing
  • Decluttering creates room for growth and alignment
  • Daily anchors help maintain calm, focus and stability
  • Gratitude strengthens resilience and emotional well-being
  • Small, consistent choices shape long-term change
  • Presence supports a more meaningful and connected life
A meaningful life isn’t created through intensity, but through presence. With intention and consistency, small choices can shape a life that feels grounded, aligned and deeply fulfilling.

Empowered Women - Navigating a shift in Libido

23/11/2025

Navigating Changes in Libido: Understanding Hormones, Stress & Wellbeing

Navigating changes in libido is something many women experience — but very few talk about. Hormones, stress, relationships, energy, emotional well-being, medications, and physical changes all play a role. If you’ve noticed a shift in your desire, you are not alone, and it is completely appropriate to seek support.

As a naturopath, nutritionist and psychotherapist, I work with women to understand the why behind these changes and gently restore hormonal, emotional, and physical balance.
Changes in libido are common and often reflect shifts in hormones, stress, health, and emotional well-being.
You’re not alone — Libido changes are common across life stages.
• Hormonal shifts — Pregnancy, perimenopause, menopause.
• Stress load — Anxiety, fatigue, burnout, relationship strain.
• Physical factors — Pain, dryness, medications, health issues.
• Recognising signs — Low interest, fewer fantasies, orgasm difficulty.
• Whole-body signal — Hormones, mood, energy, inflammation.
• Clinical insight — Hormones, thyroid, stress markers, nutrients.
• Individualised care — Naturopathy, nutrition, psychotherapy.

Changes in libido are not something to ignore or feel alone in. With the right support, it is possible to understand the underlying causes and gently restore balance across hormones, emotional well-being, and physical health.

Pain Management

9/11/2025

Integrated Model of Chronic Pain Management: A Whole-Person Approach to Healing

Chronic pain affects many people and can be physically and emotionally overwhelming. When pain persists beyond the acute phase, it often reflects more than a single cause—shaped by interactions between the body, nervous system, lifestyle, and emotional health. Understanding this broader picture is key to supporting recovery.
  • Chronic pain often involves the body, mind, and emotional health
  • Pain may be influenced by injury, inflammation, and nerve sensitivity
  • Stress, trauma, hormones, and lifestyle can contribute to ongoing pain
  • The nervous system can become sensitised, keeping pain signals active
  • Chronic pain may affect sleep, mood, appetite, and energy levels
  • Testing, such as blood work, imaging, and functional assessments, can guide care
  • Addressing root causes supports more effective long-term outcomes
  • Integrated care includes medical support, nutrition, lifestyle, and herbal medicine
  • Mind-body approaches help regulate the stress response and nervous system
  • Daily foundations—sleep, movement, hydration, and diet—support recovery
  • Personalised care is essential, as each person’s experience of pain is unique
Chronic pain is rarely a single-condition issue—it reflects a complex interplay within the body and mind. With an integrated, personalised approach, it becomes possible to move beyond symptom management toward greater understanding, improved function, and long-term wellbeing.

The 8 Faces of Insomnia

2/11/2025

The 8 Faces of Insomnia: Understanding Sleep Patterns, Stress & Restoration

There is rarely a single cause for sleeplessness. Sleep reflects the interaction between the body, mind, and emotions—often shaped by patterns of stress, lifestyle, and physiological imbalance. Understanding these patterns can help guide a more personalised and effective path back to restorative rest.
  • Anxious Perfectionist — Racing thoughts, elevated nighttime stress hormones
  • Sensitive Dreamer — Light sleep, vivid dreams, reduced nervous system resilience
  • Tense Achiever — Waking between 1–3 am, muscle tension, difficulty switching off
  • Burnout State — Exhausted yet wired, disrupted energy and sleep rhythms
  • The Worrier — Overthinking, gut disturbance, unstable blood sugar
  • Neuro-Metabolic Congestion — Inflammation, sluggish detox pathways, brain fog
  • Restricted Circulator — Poor circulation, palpitations, fatigue, frequent waking
  • Overheated & Excitable Type — Heightened stimulation, irritability, restless sleep
  • Insomnia often reflects underlying physiological and emotional patterns
  • Stress, hormones, gut health, and metabolism all influence sleep quality
  • Identifying the pattern allows for more targeted and effective treatment
  • Sleep hygiene extends beyond routine to include nervous system regulation
When the underlying pattern of insomnia is recognised, sleep support becomes more precise, personalised, and effective. Restoring sleep is not about quick fixes, but about understanding the body and gently guiding it back to balance.

Men’s Recalibration

26/10/2025

Precision Health for Men: DNA-Guided Strategies for Performance & Resilience

Men often want clarity—not complexity. Precision health meets this need by providing measurable insights and targeted strategies. Using DNA testing, it becomes possible to understand how your body responds to stress, nutrients, and lifestyle, allowing for more effective and sustainable performance outcomes.
  • Chronic stress, overwork, and poor sleep can impact performance before symptoms appear
  • Fatigue and low motivation can occur even when standard blood tests are normal
  • DNA testing provides insight into stress response, detoxification, nutrients, and energy systems
  • Precision health replaces guesswork with targeted, personalised strategies
  • A structured approach supports long-term resilience and performance
  • Many men report improved focus, sleep, motivation, and overall energy
  • Particularly relevant for burnout, fatigue, and declining performance
  • Sustainable health is built through measurable, data-informed decisions
Real strength begins with awareness and evolves through action. When health strategies are guided by data and tailored to the individual, performance, resilience, and well-being can be restored and sustained.

Understanding. Allergies, Intolerances and Sensitivities.

19/10/2025

Allergies, Intolerances & Sensitivities: Understanding Your Body’s Reactions

Spring brings colour, freshness—and for many, increased reactions. Allergies, intolerances, and sensitivities can reflect how the body responds to foods and environmental triggers. Understanding these responses is the first step toward restoring balance without unnecessary restriction.
  • Allergies — Immune system reactions that can cause rapid symptoms such as hives, swelling, or breathing difficulty
  • Intolerances — Digestive responses when the body struggles to break down certain foods
  • Sensitivities — Delayed reactions that may appear hours or days after exposure
  • Gut health connection — A large portion of immune activity occurs in the gut, influencing reactivity
  • Common symptoms — Fatigue, headaches, bloating, skin changes, and mood shifts
  • Hidden triggers — Foods and environmental exposures may not always be obvious
  • Pattern tracking — Awareness of food and symptoms helps identify personal triggers
  • Functional testing — Microbiome and food reactivity testing can provide deeper insight
  • Natural support — Nutrition, herbal medicine, and lifestyle strategies can help regulate immune responses
When you understand how your body responds, you can move from confusion to clarity. With the right support, it becomes possible to reduce reactions, restore balance, and feel more in control of your health.

When Your Gut Feels the Pressure to Be Perfect

12/10/2025

Gut Health, Anxiety & Perfectionism: Understanding the Mind–Body Connection

In clinical observation, patterns of perfectionism and high-functioning anxiety often appear alongside digestive symptoms. When the mind is under constant pressure, the gut can reflect this strain through tension, bloating, reflux, or sensitivity. Understanding this connection is key to restoring balance.

  • Chronic stress and perfectionism can activate the fight-or-flight response
  • Stress hormones may disrupt digestion and gut motility
  • Common symptoms include bloating, reflux, cramps, IBS, and gut sensitivity
  • The gut and nervous system are closely connected and influence each other
  • Ongoing pressure can keep the body in a heightened state of alert
  • Digestive symptoms may reflect emotional and nervous system overload
  • Listening to symptoms helps guide more effective care
  • Rest, safety, and stress regulation support digestive healing
  • Personalised care is essential, as each individual’s pattern is unique
When the body is under pressure, it often speaks through the gut. By addressing both the nervous system and digestive health, it becomes possible to move from tension toward balance, restoring a sense of ease across the whole system.

Endocrine disruptors - Chemicals affecting Hormones

4/10/2025

Endocrine Disruptors: Understanding Everyday Chemicals and Hormonal Health

Endocrine disruptors are part of modern life—present in products, packaging, and our environment. While complete avoidance isn’t realistic, awareness allows for practical choices that can reduce exposure and support the body’s natural hormonal balance over time.
• Hormone interference — chemicals can mimic, block or disrupt natural hormones.
• Everyday exposure — plastics, pesticides, cosmetics, household products.
• Food sources — packaging, additives, pesticides, hormones in animal products.
• Heavy metals — aluminium, mercury, cadmium, lead and arsenic.
• Lifestyle factors — chronic stress, processed foods, dehydration.
• Cumulative effects — small exposures build up over time.
• Health impact — fertility, thyroid, metabolism, mood and energy.
• Reducing exposure — whole foods, glass containers, natural products.
Reducing exposure to endocrine disruptors doesn’t require perfection. Small, consistent choices can help support hormonal balance, resilience, and long-term well-being.

Hormonal balance is closely linked with stress responses, gut health, and inflammation, often influencing nervous system regulation and mood

Hormonal shifts can also impact musculoskeletal pain and recovery

The interaction between hormones and digestion highlights the importance of gut health and inflammation

3 Way circus -Stress - Anxiety and Depression

28/9/2025

The 3-Way Circus: Stress, Anxiety & Depression: Understanding the Cycle & How to Break It Naturally

Many people get caught in a cycle of stress, anxiety, and low mood—each one influencing and reinforcing the other. Rather than existing in isolation, these states interact through the nervous system, hormones, and gut health, shaping both emotional and physical well-being.
  • Stress, anxiety, and depression often reinforce each other in a repeating loop
  • Chronic stress activates the HPA axis and elevates cortisol levels
  • Elevated cortisol can disrupt mood-regulating brain circuits and neuroplasticity
  • Anxiety is linked to heightened amygdala activity and persistent worry patterns
  • Ongoing stress and anxiety may reduce serotonin and dopamine activity
  • The gut–brain axis links digestion with mood and emotional regulation
  • Neurotransmitters and hormones influence how we think, feel, and respond
  • Nutrient absorption and gut health play a role in mental well-being
  • Integrated care may include nutrition, herbal medicine, lifestyle support, and psychotherapy
When we begin to understand the patterns behind stress, anxiety, and low mood, we can start to step out of the cycle. With the right support, it becomes possible to restore balance across the mind and body.

The Pancreas: Quiet Achiever or Silent Killer?

21/9/2025

Pancreas Health: Understanding Digestion, Blood Sugar & Metabolic Balance

The pancreas is a quiet achiever—supporting digestion, regulating blood sugar, and maintaining steady energy. When under strain, however, changes can occur silently, with rising blood sugar impacting long-term health before symptoms become obvious. Understanding its role is key to prevention and early support.
  • The pancreas supports both digestion and blood sugar regulation
  • Digestive enzymes help break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates
  • Insulin allows glucose to move into cells for energy
  • Insulin resistance occurs when cells no longer respond effectively
  • The pancreas compensates by producing more insulin, increasing strain
  • Early dysfunction may present with few or no obvious symptoms
  • Possible signs include fatigue, bloating, abdominal discomfort, and changes in weight or blood sugar
  • Testing, such as HbA1c, C-peptide, lipase, and faecal elastase, can assess function
  • Diet, lifestyle, and metabolic support play a key role in prevention
  • Early intervention supports long-term metabolic and organ health
Supporting pancreatic health requires a whole-body approach—integrating nutrition, lifestyle, and early monitoring. With awareness and timely intervention, it is possible to protect metabolic balance and reduce the risk of long-term complications.

Liver Health

24/8/2025

Liver Health: Understanding Detox, Symptoms & Whole-Body Support

In the clinic, liver health is one of the most common underlying issues we see. Liver health is often overlooked, yet it plays a central role in metabolism, hormone balance, detoxification, and energy. When the liver, kidneys, and gut are under strain, symptoms can appear subtly—affecting digestion, mood, immunity, and overall wellbeing. Supporting these systems can create meaningful shifts in health.
  • The liver performs over 500 essential functions in the body
  • It regulates blood sugar, fats, and cholesterol
  • Detoxification pathways process toxins, alcohol, and medications
  • The liver stores key nutrients, including vitamins and minerals
  • It plays an important role in hormone metabolism and balance
  • Early signs of imbalance may include fatigue, bloating, nausea, and brain fog
  • Lifestyle factors such as diet, alcohol, and medications can impact liver health
  • Liver function tests can help detect early dysfunction
  • Daily habits such as whole foods, hydration, movement, and sleep support function
  • Liver health influences energy, immunity, and long-term well-being
Supporting liver health is a foundational step in restoring balance across the body. With the right approach, it becomes possible to improve energy, regulate hormones, and enhance overall resilience and well-being.

The Science Behind the Anxiety Orchestra

16/8/2025

Is Anxiety More Than “In Your Head”? A Whole-Body Perspective

Anxiety is often described as something “in the mind,” yet it reflects a complex, whole-body response. The brain, nervous system, hormones, gut health, and past experiences all interact to shape how anxiety is felt and expressed. Understanding this broader picture allows for more personalised and effective support.
  • Anxiety involves the brain, nervous system, hormones, and gut
  • The nervous system may remain in a prolonged fight-or-flight state
  • Neurotransmitters influence mood, alertness, and emotional resilience
  • Blood sugar fluctuations can trigger or worsen anxiety symptoms
  • Gut health and inflammation can affect brain signalling
  • Breathing patterns and muscle tension can reinforce anxiety cycles
  • Past experiences and learned responses shape stress patterns
  • Medication may support symptoms but may not address underlying drivers
  • Personalised, integrative care supports long-term balance
Anxiety is not simply something to silence—it is something to understand. When the whole system is supported, it becomes possible to move beyond symptom management toward lasting balance and resilience.

Steps to Self-Care

10/8/2025

Steps to Self-Care: Moving from Depletion to Balance.

Often, we sense something isn’t quite right—but knowing where to begin can feel overwhelming. When symptoms persist despite quick fixes, it may be a sign your body needs a more structured and supportive approach. Self-care is not about doing more—it’s about responding to what your body truly needs.

  • Pause and check in with your physical and emotional state
  • Identify where you feel most depleted—body, mind, or environment
  • Focus on what you need now, rather than what you “should” do
  • Prioritise sleep, nourishment, and regular meals to stabilise energy
  • Support the nervous system with rest, breathing, and gentle movement
  • Simplify commitments and set boundaries to reduce overwhelm
  • Address underlying drivers such as stress, hormones, and nutrition
  • Avoid quick fixes that mask symptoms without resolving causes
  • Build small, consistent habits instead of all-or-nothing changes
  • Seek guidance when needed for clarity and direction
  • Use testing and assessment to better understand your body
  • Commit to long-term well-being rather than short-term relief

Self-care is not a luxury—it is a process of awareness, consistency, and alignment. When approached with intention and the right support, it becomes a powerful pathway to restoring balance, resilience, and long-term well-being.
